Choosing Your House Number Style
Choosing Your House Number Style

Fonts, finishes, and why going bigger than you think is almost always the right call.

SHOWN IN Neutraface · 14"

If you’re reading this, you already know that house numbers are more than just digits on a wall. They’re your home’s signature - and you want to get them right.

A well-designed house number can boost your home’s curb appeal. A poorly thought-out one? Missed deliveries, frustrated visitors, and - in a worst case scenario - crucial delays when it counts most.

The good news: choosing the right house numbers isn’t complicated. It just takes a little thought in three directions: aesthetics, size, and visibility. Let’s dig in.

Step One: Think About Your Home’s Aesthetic

Your house number should feel like it belongs - not like an afterthought. That means considering three things: the architectural style of your home, how it fits with the surrounding neighbourhood, and your own personal taste. All three matter.

To help you find your fit, here’s a look at the font styles we’ve carefully curated - and what kinds of homes they tend to love.

Classic & Traditional

Belizio - A sturdy, academic-looking style with old-world confidence. Belizio suits traditional architecture beautifully: think craftsman homes, brick colonials, and heritage properties where timeless trumps trendy. It’s the kind of font that looks like it’s always been there.

Art Deco & Mid-Century (Vintage Modern)

This category is for homes with a story - and owners who appreciate one.

Deco evokes the glamour of the 1920s and ’30s - geometric, elegant, and unapologetically bold. Perfect for homes with strong lines and a bit of drama.

Neutraface is the quintessential mid-century modern font - a bridge between vintage charm and clean design. If your home leans toward warm modernism (think exposed wood, flat rooflines, a general “Palm Springs” vibe), Neutraface will feel right at home.

Rama is a 1950s and ’60s retro gothic style. It’s narrow - at first glance, almost surprisingly so - but it reads beautifully at scale, and it’s honestly one of our favourites. Don’t sleep on this one.

Contemporary & Universal Modern

These are the workhorses - versatile, highly legible, and suited to a wide range of modern homes.

Helvetica is arguably the gold standard of modern design. Neutral, clear, and professional - it’s the font that never puts a foot wrong. If you’re not sure where to start, start here.

Solomon Sans takes the clarity of a modern sans-serif and softens it slightly, for a friendlier, more approachable feel without sacrificing legibility.

Euro was designed in the 1950s, but it carries a quietly futuristic energy that still looks fresh today. A great choice if you want something that feels a little different without being loud about it.

Instrument Sans is a modern “neo-grotesque” font known for exceptional legibility - clean, confident, and highly readable at any size. We offer it in Bold, which gives a strong presence without feeling heavy-handed.

Not sure which one is right for you? Try our number previewer on the website - you’ll get a much better feel for how each style looks at real-world scale.

Step Two: Go Bigger Than You Think

Here’s a design move most people don’t consider until they see it done well: size. Nothing says bold and modern like house numbers that other people were simply too timid to install.

Most off-the-shelf options top out at 8 inches. Our website lists characters up to 16 inches tall - and if you want to go even bigger, reach out and we’ll talk.

Larger numbers aren’t just a style choice. They’re a visibility choice. Which brings us to our third consideration.

Step Three: Contrast Is Everything

Whatever font or size you choose, contrast will make or break how your numbers read from the street. Choosing a colour that stands apart from your mounting surface - light numbers on a dark wall, dark numbers on a light one - makes them pop visually and dramatically improves legibility at a distance or in low light.

This is also, not coincidentally, what most municipal codes are trying to enforce. More on that in our next post.

Your Turn

You’ve got the framework. Now it’s time to put your designer brain to work. Browse the styles, try the previewer, and don’t be afraid to go a little bolder than you planned. The right house number is out there - and when you find it, you’ll know.
